Chronic exposure to water and other chemical irritants can cause irritant contact dermatitis. Other common skin irritants are detergents, soaps, acids, alkalis, solvents, metalworking fluids, and abrasives. [LaDou, p. 325] This nonspecific agent is also linked to "Asthma, irritant-induced." Substances reported to cause irritant-induced asthma include HCl, calcium oxide, chlorine, acetic acid, sulfur dioxide, uranium hexafluoride, hydrazine, floor sealant, metal coating remover, spray paint containing ammonia, smoke inhalation, and diisocyanates.
