Safe when used as a flavoring agent in food; [JECFA] 1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol) is toxic by ingestion; As little as 1 mL can cause coma and 3.5 mL can cause death; Patients may have epigastric burning, nausea, ataxia, muscle weakness, delirium, stupor, and occasionally convulsions; Recovery reported after a dose as high as 30 mL; In a series of 109 children, eucalyptus oil ingestion caused only minor CNS depression when dose was 2-3 mL; [HSDB] May cause irritation; [MSDSonline]
