Synonyms
EGD; 1,2-Diacetoxyethane; 1,2-Ethanediol diacetate; Aptex Donor H-plus; Ethanediol diacetate; Ethylene diacetate; Ethylene diethanoate; Ethylene glycol, diacetate; Glycol diacetate; [ChemIDplus] UN1993
Category
Ethylene Glycols
Description
Colorless liquid; [Hawley]
Sources/Uses
Used as solvent for oils, explosives, cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, natural products, printing inks, perfume fixatives, resins, and lacquers; Also used as a non-discoloring plasticizer for ethyl and benzyl cellulose; [HSDB] Used mainly as a re-flow solvent in thermoplastic acrylic coatings and in foundries (slow-release source of acetic acid for making cores); Also used as an ink solvent; [EPA ChAMP HPV: Ethylene glycol diacetate - 2002]
Comments
Its toxicity in animal experiments is thought to be due to metabolic conversion into ethylene glycol (EG); Animals poisoned with EGD have urinary oxalate crystals, an almost pathognomic sign of EG toxicosis; [EPA ChAMP HPV: Ethylene glycol diacetate - 2002] A mild eye irritant; [HSDB]; Causes general anesthesia in oral lethal-dose studies; Other adverse effects in multiple dose tests were changes in the blood and liver; [RTECS] Caused kidney stone formation and kidney damage in high-dose feeding studies of animals; [CHEMINFO] A mild skin irritant; [MSDSonline] See "Ethylene glycol."
