Synonyms
Chlorine fluoride oxide; Chlorine fluoride oxide (ClO3F); Chlorine oxyfluoride; Chloryl (per-)fluoride; Perchloryl fluoride; [ChemIDplus] UN3083
Category
Oxidizers
Description
Colorless gas with a characteristic, sweet odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used as a fluorinating agent in chemical syntheses; [ACGIH]
Comments
TLV Basis is fluorosis and methemoglobinemia. Dogs and rats exposed to 24 ppm for 6 months showed effects likely resulting from methemoglobinemia. No evidence of lung damage in dogs or rats exposed to 24 ppm; In subchronic studies of rats, dyspnea, cyanosis, methemoglobinemia, fluorosis, lung consolidation, and liver injury were observed. [ACGIH] Listed in the table "Examples of Industrial Chemicals for Which Methemoglobin Formation is NOT the Principal Cause of Toxicity"; [ACGIH] Possible frostbite from contact with liquid; [NIOSH] May cause respiratory tract irritation and pulmonary edema; Can induce methemoglobinemia; May cause fluorosis; [ICSC] See "FLUORIDES."
