Description
Colourless liquid; mp = 10 deg C; [ICSC] Clear light yellow liquid; [Aldrich MSDS]
Sources/Uses
Used to make its corresponding diisocyanate, polymers (mainly polyurethanes), and to cure epoxy resins; [HSDB] Used to make hardeners for epoxy resins and coatings (and directly as a hardener), in epoxy-based self-leveling and trowelable flooring systems, for paving, concrete protection, and repair, in coatings for corrosion protection of metal, adhesives, and anchoring compounds, and in paints; Also used to make dyes and non-crystalline specialty polyamides; [Reference #2]
Comments
If inhaled, it can provoke coughing and nausea. [CHRIS] An epoxy resin hardener and suspected cause of occupational asthma, isophorone diamine is one component of mixtures causing occupational asthma in two separate documented cases: (1) [Occupational asthma due to EPO 60. Lambourn EM, Hayes JP, McAllister WA, Taylor AJ. Br J Ind Med 1992 Apr;49(4):294-5]; and (2) [Occupational asthma caused by a hardener containing an aliphatic and a cycloaliphatic diamine. Aleva RM et al. Am Rev Respir Dis 1992 May;145(5):1217-8] Corrosive to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; Inhalation can cause pulmonary edema; May cause skin sensitization. [ICSC] Danger of skin sensitization; [MAK] Causes burns; Inhalation may cause corrosive injuries to upper respiratory tract and lungs; Harmful by ingestion; [Aldrich MSDS]
