Category
Plant Growth Regulators
Description
Colorless solid; Technical product is off-white solid; [HSDB] White solid; Formulated as soluble concentrate/liquid; [Reference #1] Light yellow powder; [Alfa Aesar MSDS]
Sources/Uses
Used as plant growth regulator to stimulate growth in apples, melons, oranges, and roses; [HSDB] Used as plant growth regulator for apples, pears, and sweet cherries (improves branching and the size and shape of fruit), white pine trees (increased branching and fullness), calla lily tubers (increases number of flowers and decreases time between flowering), and spinach grown for seed (causes uniform bolting and higher seed production); Some end-use products also contain Gibberellins A4 and A7 as active ingredients; [Reference #1]
Comments
An eye irritant; A mild skin irritant in rabbits over 72 hours; No evidence of skin sensitization in guinea pigs; Evidence of renal injury observed in 13-week feeding study of rats at the highest dose tested (approximately 295 mg/kg in males and 322 mg/kg in females); Reduced maternal and fetal body weights observed in study of rats dosed by gavage on days 6-15 of gestation (maternal and developmental NOAEL’s = 50 mg/kg/day); No other fetal effects or teratogenicity observed; [HSDB] Causes lacrimation and somnolence in oral lethal-dose studies of rats and mice; Causes changes in food intake, kidney, ureter, and bladder, and weight loss in 13-week feeding study of rats; [RTECS] A skin and strong eye irritant; [Aldrich MSDS]
