A sentinel health event (occupational) associated with asbestos exposure; [Mullan] Seventy percent of patients with pleural mesothelioma reported in Denmark around 1980 were excess cases due to occupational asbestos exposure assuming a baseline incidence rate for women in rural areas. [Skov T, Mikkelsen S, Svane O, Lynge E. Reporting of occupational cancer in Denmark. Scand J Work Environ Health 1990;16:401-5] Asbestos in floor and wall covering was banned in Sweden by 1976, but mesothelioma incidence in construction workers has not yet peaked. [Hyperlink] "It has been suggested that concentrations of more than 1 to 2 million fibers/gram of dry tissue indicate occupational exposure to asbestos." [PMID 22937893] "During 1999-2015, the mesothelioma age-adjusted death rate decreased 21.7% from 13.96 per million population (1999) to 10.93 (2015) . . . It was estimated that the number of mesothelioma cases among males would peak during 2000-2004 (approximately 2,000 cases) and after that period, the number of mesothelioma cases was expected to decline and return to background levels by 2055." [MMWR March 2017] "Risk of mesothelioma after cessation of asbestos exposure: a systemic review and meta-regression" [PMID 30993422]
Latency/Incubation
"In a population-based study in Sweden, the mean latency was 48 years, and in a study of cases from the Italian Mesothelioma Register, the median latency period was 45 years." [PMID 22937893]
