Decreased white blood cells; normal white blood cell count equals 4,500-10,000 per microliter; Neutropenia = <500 cells/mm3 or <1000 cells/mm3 with predicted decline to <500 cells/m3; [ABX Guide, p. 62] Common in many viral infections, e.g., rubella and influenza, and in severe sepsis; In returned travelers, it accompanies malaria, typhoid, brucellosis, rickettsial diseases, and visceral leishmaniasis.
