Category
Herbicides, Nitroaromatic
Description
Orange or yellow solid with a pungent odor; [HSDB]
Sources/Uses
Consumption patterns in 1986: 40% for soybeans; 16% for peanuts; 15% for potatoes; also used for alfalfa, snap beans, peas, grapes, and almonds; [HSDB] Used as herbicide, insecticide, and miticide; [Merck Index]
Comments
The pathophysiology, like that of pentachlorophenol, involves the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation. Yellow stains appear on the skin after dermal contact with the nitroaromatic herbicides. Fatal poisoning can occur after dermal absorption. Cataracts have been reported in animal experiments and after occupational exposure. In severe poisoning, these herbicides can cause injury to the liver and kidneys. [EPA Pesticides, p. 104-5] An eye irritant; Can be absorbed through skin; Short-term exposure may have effects on the GI tract and CNS; Prolonged or repeated exposure may affect the kidneys, liver, blood, immune system, and eyes (cataract); Aerosol exposure in hot environments may result in death; May be a reproductive toxicant in humans; [ICSC] A powerful oxidizing agent and explosive; Extremely toxic (enhanced by high ambient temperature and physical activity); [CAMEO]
Restricted
All uses cancelled in the U.S. in 1986; [EXTOXNET]
