Category
Organophosphate Insecticides
Description
Colorless to yellow oily liquid; [HSDB]
Sources/Uses
"This chemical ingredient is not found in any products." [NPIRS] The major metabolite of dimethoate; Has been used as an insecticide in vegetable and forage crops to control aphids and red spider mites; Has active international registrations; [HSDB]
Comments
A small number of the organophosphates (OPs) can Induce Delayed Neuropathy (OPIDN). OPIDN usually occurs after ingestion and is usually nonoccupational. [Levy, p. 431] Allergic contact dermatitis reported in farmworkers; [Kanerva, p. 781] Contact dermatitis is rare. [Kanerva, p. 1783] The major degradate/metabolite and oxygen analog of dimethoate; More toxic than dimethoate; A potent cholinesterase inhibitor; [Reference #1] May cause irritation; A highly toxic cholinesterase inhibitor; Readily absorbed through skin; Toxic by ingestion; Targets CNS, heart, blood, and eyes; [Aldrich MSDS] “The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline.” [TLVs and BEIs] See "Dimethoate."
Restricted
Not registered for use in the US, but has active registrations internationally; [Reference #1]
BEI
Acetylcholinesterase activity in red blood cells = 70% of individual's baseline; Butylcholinesterase activity in serum or plasma = 60% of individual's baseline; Sample at end of shift; [TLVs and BEIs]
Vapor Pressure
2.48E-05 mm Hg
