Agent Name
Diglycidyl ether
Major Category
Plastics & Rubber
Synonyms
DGE; 1,2,6,7-Diepoxy-4-oxaheptane; Bis(2,3-epoxy-1 propyl) ether; Bis(2,3-epoxypropyl) ether; DGE; Di(2,3-epoxy)propyl ether; Diallyl Ether Dioxide; Diepoxy propyl ether; Diglycidyl ether; Ether, bis(2,3-epoxypropyl); Ether, diglycidyl; Glycidyl ether; [ChemIDplus]
Description
Colorless liquid with a strong, irritating odor; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
DGE is used in epoxy resins; it is also used to treat textiles and to stabilize chlorinated organic compounds. [ACGIH]
Comments
The TLV is based on male reproductive effects and irritation to the skin and eyes. Male rats develop reproductive toxicity after 60 4-hour exposures to 0.3 ppm. High concentrations induce CNS depression in experimental animals. In the past, some workers developed slow healing burns. [ACGIH] Severely irritating to the respiratory tract and may cause pulmonary edema; May cause skin sensitization; [ICSC]
Skin Designation (ACGIH)
Insufficient data
PEL (OSHA)
Ceiling(OSHA) = 0.5 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs
Basis for original (SCP) IDLH: The chosen IDLH is based on the male mouse 4hour LC50 of 30 ppm [Hine et al. 1956]. . . . Human data: None relevant for use in determining the revised IDLH.
Lethal Concentration
LC50 (rat) = 200 ppm/4H
Explanatory Notes
An odor threshold has not been established, but DGE is recognizable by odor above 5 ppm; [ACGIH] Flash point = 64 deg C; VP from HSDB;
ACGIH Carcinogen
