Synonyms
Calcium Chrome Yellow; Calcium chromate(VI); Calcium chromium oxide (CaCrO4); Calcium monochromate; Chromatite syn; Gelbin; Sintered calcium chromate; Yellow ultramarine; [ChemIDplus]
Category
Chromium Compounds, Inorganic
Description
Bright yellow powder or crystals; Sparingly soluble in water at 20 deg C; [ACGIH]
Sources/Uses
Used as a corrosion inhibitor, a battery depolarizer, and a metal coating and primer; [ACGIH]
Comments
CrVI compounds are irritants, sensitizers, and may be corrosive to the skin. CrVI compounds are respiratory tract irritants and may cause pulmonary sensitization. CrVI may cause acute tubular necrosis and liver injury. [ATSDR Case Studies] Calcium chromate is approximately 10 times more potent than zinc chromate as an animal carcinogen by intrabronchial implantation. [ACGIH] Skin contact may cause dermatitis and ulcers; [CHRIS] Very toxic by ingestion; Not soluble in water; [CAMEO] See "Chromium" and linked occupational diseases.
