Description
Yellow crystals (trihydrate); [Merck Index] "An odorless yellow-green solid. Sinks in and mixes with water. A hydrate of formula (H2SO4)2.7H2O is also known." [CAMEO]
Sources/Uses
Used in nuclear reactors; [HSDB]
Comments
This compound is slightly soluble in water and soluble in sulfuric acid. Its melting point is 100 degrees C (decomposes). About 10% of soluble uranium compounds are absorbed after ingestion. Some absorption through the skin can occur. The estimated biological half-life of soluble uranium compounds is days to weeks. [HSDB] An irritant to the nose, throat, and eyes; [CAMEO] See "Uranium" and linked occupational diseases.
