Cysteamine is a natural antioxidant, precursor in taurine biosynthesis, and component of coenzyme A; Used in medical research (potent ulcerogen), as a drug (nephropathic cystinosis), and antidote (acetaminophen poisoning); [Merck Index] "A radiation-protective agent that oxidizes in air to form CYSTAMINE. It can be given intravenously or orally to treat radiation sickness. The bitartrate has been used for the oral treatment of nephropathic cystinosis."
