Naphthenic acids, chromium salts
Agent Name
Naphthenic acids, chromium salts
Synonyms
Chromium (III) naphthenate; Naphthenic acid, chromium salt; [Strem Chemicals MSDS]
Category
Chromium Compounds, Inorganic
Description
Approximately 30% in mineral spirits: Dark green liquid; [Strem Chemicals MSDS]
Sources/Uses
"Naphthenic acid (CAS: 1338-24-5 ) is the name for an unspecific mixture of several cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl carboxylic acids with molecular weight of 120 to well over 700 atomic mass units. The main fraction are carboxylic acids with a carbon backbone of 9 to 20 carbons. Salts of naphthenic acids, which are naphthenates, are widely used as hydrophobic sources of metal ions in diverse applications." [Wikipedia]
Comments
"The trivalent form of Cr is 500-1000 times less toxic than the hexavalent form. Organic Cr-containing complexes of toxicological importance have not been reported." [Nordberg, p. 718] See "Naphthenic acid." See "Chromium."
TLV (ACGIH)
0.003 mg/m3, as Cr(III), inhalable particulate matter
Explanatory Notes
Soluble Cr(III) compounds are assigned RSEN and DSEN; "Trivalent chromium compounds--with the exception of chromium(III) acetate, chromium(III) chloride hexahydrate, and chromium(III) nitrate--are insoluble or poorly soluble in water . . ." [ACGIH]
