Category
Polymers
Description
Supplied as powders, emulsions, and solutions; Soluble in polar solvents such as water; Stable below 210 deg C, but amide groups decompose to ammonia above 210 deg C; [Ullmann]
Sources/Uses
Mainly used as a flocculant for water clarification: boiler water pretreatment and treatment of wastewater from paper mills and sewage plants; Also used in paper finishing (a strengthening agent), oil production (drilling fluids and flooding fluids), mining (plugging underground strata), agriculture (growing medium and seed coating), and to control dust in open rail cars and trucks; [Ullmann]
Comments
Contains < 0.2% acrylamide monomer; Toxicity by ingestion is low. [Sax] Relatively nontoxic, but the monomers are toxic; Care should be taken to limit the concentration of unreacted monomers; Control fumes by venting processes to scrubbers or laboratory fume hoods; [Ullmann] See "Acrylamide."
