Sources/Uses
Rhodamine 101 has a very similar structure to Rhodamine 640, which is used as a laser dye. "Laser dyes include a large number of long-known fluorescent compounds such as Rhodamine 6 G. Other representatives are optical brighteners and fluorescent dyes from the large chemical companies (e.g., Bayer, CIBA-Geigy, Hoechst, Eastman Kodak)." [Ullmann: Laser Dyes] Rhodamine dyes (aminoxanthenes) are xanthene dyes that are very important commercially. They are brilliant, blue-red, fluorescent dyes used as colorants in inks, paper, and plastics. Sulfonated derivatives are used as wool and polyamide dyes. Red fluorescent pigments are produced from Rhodamine dyes, and some of these are used as laser dyes. [Ullmann: Fluorescent Dyes]
