Category
Organophosphate Insecticides
Description
Colorless liquid with a faint ester-like odor. [insecticide]; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Exterminators use a 85-90% concentration, while the liquid or granules used for house and garden contains 1-5% diazinon. [ATSDR ToxFAQs]
Comments
In animals, diazinon has a half-life of about 12 hours. Cows completely eliminate diazinon within two weeks of the last exposure. [http://ace.orst.edu/info/nptn] Classified as mildly or moderately toxic depending upon the formulation; [EXTOXNET] Diazinon causes hepatic steatosis in high-dose feeding studies of rats. [Zimmerman, p. 394] “The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline.” [TLVs and BEIs]
Restricted
Use on sod farms and golf courses cancelled by EPA in 1988; [EXTOXNET]
