Category
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Description
Yellow solid; [HSDB] Gold solid; [MSDSonline]
Sources/Uses
Found in particulates in emissions from combustion, e.g., diesel exhausts; Used as a research chemical and produced by one company as an intermediate for 1-azidopyrene, used in photosenistive printing; [NTP]
Comments
"1-Nitropyrene is the 'marker' nitroPAH for diesel exhaust, and its presence in ambient air samples is a sign of pollution by diesel vehicle traffic. . . . In general, the mass emission of particles, emissions of particle-bound PAHs and nitroPAHs, and mutagenic activity levels generally decreased with the use of either particulate traps or catalytic converters." [Reference #1] "Whether the nitroarenes are responsible for, or contribute to, the human carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust has not been determined." [NTP] May cause irritation; [MSDSonline] See "POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS."
