Skin or eye contact can cause "painful, deep-seated, long-lasting burns." In animal studies, bromine trifluoride produces elevated fluoride levels and severe lung irritation and pneumonitis; [ACGIH] Animals exposed chronically to > 3 ppm have liver, kidney, and respiratory injury; [HSDB] A corrosive substance that can cause pulmonary edema; May cause fluorosis; [ICSC] See "FLUORIDES."
