Category
Elements, Nonmetallic
Description
Black, odorless solid; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used mainly in rubber (90%) and as a pigment (9%); [ACGIH] Carbon black is a manufactured material while soot is a waste product of combustion. Compared to soot, carbon black particles are more homogeneous and less biologically active. [AIHAJ 2001;62(2):218-28]
Comments
The TLV Basis is bronchitis; Carbon black (CB) contains less than 0.3% extractable impurities; Workers who inhale CB have "very low" exposure to PAHs; Epidemiology studies have found an association with small opacities on chest x-ray, but there is "doubt on their biological significance." Respiratory symptoms and chest x-ray abnormalities may be reversible after cessation of exposure; [ACGIH]
