Description
Colorless gas with a pungent and very irritating odor; Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used in organic synthesis; generated from the thermal degradation of fluoropolymers, e.g., polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyfluoroethylenepropylene; [ACGIH]
Comments
Liquid is a severe skin irritant; [CHRIS] Toxic effects from the liberation of fluoride by hydrolysis; causes pulmonary edema in animals exposed to lethal concentrations and liver and kidney damage in subchronic studies; "Critical Effects" are irritation; bone; fluorosis. [ACGIH] Possible frostbite from contact with liquid; [NIOSH] See "FLUORIDES."
