Major Category
Other Classes
Cyclopentadiene formula graphical representation
Synonyms
1,3-Cyclopentadiene; Cyclopentadiene; Pentole; Pyropentylene; R-Pentine; [ChemIDplus]
Category
Aliphatics, Unsaturated
Description
Colorless liquid with an irritating, terpene-like odor; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used in resin manufacturing and other organic syntheses; [ACGIH]
Comments
Cyclopentadiene causes narcosis and liver injury in animal experiments. It has an irritating odor that is objectionable to workers. [ACGIH, 1987] A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; [ICSC]"TLV and Documentation withdrawn; . . . Since cyclopentadiene (CPD) dimerizes into DCPD [Dicyclopentadiene], we recommended using the TLV for DCPD if CPD is of concern. There is little information available on the toxicity of CPD." [ACGIH, 2019] See "Dicyclopentadiene."

Exposure Assessment

Skin Designation (ACGIH)
Insufficient data
PEL (OSHA)
75 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH)
750 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs
Basis for original (SCP) IDLH: The chosen IDLH is based on the statement by Deichmann and Gerarde [1969] that 4 of 6 rats died from a 4hour exposure to 2,000 ppm [Smyth et al. 1954]. . . . Human data: None relevant for use in determining the revised IDLH.
Vapor Pressure
435 mm Hg
Odor Threshold Low
1.8 ppm
Lethal Concentration
LC67 (rat) = 2,000 ppm/4H
Explanatory Notes
Odor threshold from AIHA; Flash point = 77 deg F; VP from HSDB;

Adverse Effects

Neurotoxin
Acute solvent syndrome
Hepatotoxin
Hepatoxic (a) from occupational exposure (secondary effect) or (b) in animal studies or in humans after ingestion
