Description
White to pale-green, crystalline solid with a faint, amine odor. [Note: Used as an accelerator in the curing of polychloroprene & other elastomers.]; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
The alkylthioureas are used as rubber accelerators; they are also used in insoles, adhesives, wet suits, detergents, plastics, and textiles. [Marks, p. 240] Used in electroplating baths and in the production of antioxidants, insecticides, fungicides, rubber accelerators, dyes, drugs, and resins; [Hawley]
Comments
Potential skin sensitizer; [Marks, p. 240] [Allergic contact dermatitis from ethylene thiourea. Bruze M, Fregert S. Contact Dermatitis 1983;3:208-12] Ethylenethiourea is a common contaminant of ethylene bisdithiocarbamates (Ferbam, Mancozeb, Maneb, Metiram, Nabam, Thiram, Vapam, Ziram, and Zineb). It causes birth defects in high-dose reproductive studies of experimental animals. [Frazier, p. 230-2] May have effects on the thyroid gland and liver; [ICSC] An eye irritant; [CAMEO]
