Sources/Uses

Used as a veterinary antimicrobial agent and a feed additive for growth promotion of swine; [HSDB] Has been used to treat swine with dysentery, but prohibited in UK after reports of carcinogenicity; [Drug Information Portal]

Comments

May cause photosensitization; [ICSC] Nalidixic acid and ciproflaxacin are similar antibiotics known to cause photosensitivity after ingestion (not occupational). [Marks, p. 203] May induce photoallergic skin reactions in stockmen; Weaned pigs fed 50-100 mg/kg carbadox medicated food for 5-10 weeks had weight loss and histological changes in the adrenal glands; In feeding studies of pregnant rats at doses of 100 mg/kg, caused embryo-lethal and teratogenic effects; [HSDB] May cause irritation; Targets the liver; [MSDSonline]
