A trichothecene mycotoxin; [Merck Index] Reportedly used as biological/chemical warfare agent; [HSDB] Zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and fusarenon X are mycotoxins produced by 3 Fusarium species (F. graminearum, F. culmorum, and F. crookwellense) that grow on wheat, barley, and maize in humid conditions. [IARC] Common contaminant of barley, corn, rye, safflower seeds, wheat, and mixed feeds; [Reference #1]
Comments
In humans, severe gastrointestinal reactions occur after ingestion. In pigs, causes feed refusal and vomiting; Causes immunosuppression in mice studies; No data on carcinogenicity in animals; [IARC] Trichothecene mycotoxins causes bone marrow suppression, leukopenia, immunosuppression, and secondary sepsis; [HSDB] Inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis; Less potent than T-2 toxin; Has also been called "vomitoxin" and "food-refusal factor."
