Dipropylene glycol methyl ether
Agent Name
Dipropylene glycol methyl ether
Synonyms
(2-Methoxymethylethoxy)propanol; Arcosolv DPM; Dipropylene glycol methyl ether; Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether; Dowanol DPM; Dowanol-50B; Glysolv DPM; Kino-red; PPG-2 methyl ether; Ucar solvent 2LM; [ChemIDplus]
Category
Glycol Ethers (P Series)
Description
Colorless liquid with a mild, ether-like odor; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used in hydraulic fluids and as a solvent. [ACGIH]
Comments
Central nervous system depression observed in animal studies; TLV Basis: liver effects and CNS effects; No liver effects when animals exposed to up to 200 ppm for 13 weeks; [ACGIH] An eye and respiratory tract irritant; Inhalation of high concentrations can cause CNS depression; [ICSC] See "Glycol ethers."
Skin Designation (ACGIH)
No
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs
Concentrations between 300 and 400 ppm have been reported to be very disagreeable [Rowe et al. 1954]. Central nervous system impairment (undefined) occurred at 1,000 ppm in one of two subjects [Stewart et al. 1970]. . . .Concentrations above 5,000 ppm are unlikely to be encountered in the workplace because of the high boiling point and low vapor pressure of this substance.
Odor Threshold Low
35 ppm
Explanatory Notes
Odor threshold from CHEMINFO; Flash point = 85 deg C; VP from HSDB;
NFPA
high ambient temp required
Neurotoxin
Acute solvent syndrome
Hepatotoxin
Hepatoxic (a) from occupational exposure (secondary effect) or (b) in animal studies or in humans after ingestion
