Description
Pale yellow liquid; [Merck Index] Colorless to yellow liquid with a strong odor of mercaptans; [Reference #1]
Sources/Uses
Used as non-systemic nematicide and soil insecticide for use on ornamentals, potatoes, fruits, nuts, and other crops; [HSDB]
Comments
Decomposes at room temperature evolving n-Propylmercaptan (flammable); A cholinesterase inhibitor that may have effects on the nervous system causing convulsions and respiratory depression; Can be absorbed through skin and eyes; [ICSC] No significant adverse effects besides cholinesterase inhibition observed in sub-chronic animal feeding studies; [HSDB] “The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline.” [TLVs and BEIs] See "1-Propanethiol."
Restricted
Use is restricted due to acute dermal toxicity (formulations containing 10% or greater); [Reference #1]
BEI
Acetylcholinesterase activity in red blood cells = 70% of individual's baseline; Butylcholinesterase activity in serum or plasma = 60% of individual's baseline; Sample at end of shift; [TLVs and BEIs]
Vapor Pressure
0.00035 mm Hg
