Manganese cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl
Agent Name
Manganese cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl
Synonyms
Cyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl; Cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl manganese; MCT; [NIOSH]
Category
Metals, Organic Compounds
Description
Yellow, crystalline solid with a characteristic odor. [Note: An antiknock additive for gasoline. May be found in an oil & gaseous solution.] [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses
Used as an anti-knock agent in unleaded gasoline--this use not permitted in the U.S.A. since 1981; [ACGIH]
Comments
Injected doses of 20 mg/kg cause convulsions and pulmonary edema in rats. MCT was estimated to be twice as toxic to the lung as MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl). In chronic inhalation studies, rats showed no outward signs of disease during the exposure period (averaging 1 mg/m3 for 4 hours/day for 11 months), but increased excitability of the nervous system was detected with electrical studies after 7 months of exposure. [ACGIH] See "Manganese" and linked occupational diseases.
