Used as insecticide; [Merck Index] A metabolite of the pesticide parathion (formed by microbial degradation, chemical oxidation, irradiation, and conversion in air promoted by sunlight); Formerly used to treat glaucoma; [HSDB]

Comments

The oxygen analog of parathion; A cholinesterase inhibitor; [Hawley] May have detrimental effects on immune and hematopoietic systems; Mutagenic effects to Salmonella and Schizosaccharomyces pombe and sister chromatid exchanges in hamster ovary cells; No evidence of delayed neurotoxicity in study with hens; [HSDB] “The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline.” [TLVs and BEIs] See "Parathion."
