Orange solid; [ICSC]
Sources/Uses
Used to make activated coal for removing sulfur dioxide from waste gases, in Mandelin's reagent for analytical toxicology of drugs, and in the production of vanadium pentoxide; [HSDB]
Comments
A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; Inhalation of dust may cause pulmonary edema; "The substance may have effects on the respiratory tract, resulting in chronic rhinitis and chronic bronchitis." [ICSC] A mild eye irritant; [HSDB] Acute pneumonitis or pulmonary edema have not been reported after occupational exposure to vanadium; [Harber, Table 29-3, p. 487] The predominant symptom associated with exposure to vanadium oxide dust is bronchitis. Asthma has been documented in workers exposed to vanadium dust, vanadium pentoxide, and vanadate. [Harber, p. 505] Based on case reports, "boilermaker's bronchitis" is a form of asthma induced by exposure to vanadium in oil tank cleaners. [PMID 6332888] [PMID 10086213] See "Vanadium." See "Vanadium pentoxide."
