Inhalation fever is an acute flu-like illness that begins several hours after heavy exposure to the causative dust or mist. Inhalation fever may be associated with leukocytosis (high white blood cell count). The chest x-ray is normal. Symptoms resolve spontaneously within 48 hours. Inhalation fever includes metal fume fever, polymer fume fever, grain fever, humidifier fever, organic dust toxic syndrome, mill fever, and Pontiac fever. See "Metal fume fever."
