tremor

Symptom/Finding
tremor
Description
The tremor of Parkinson's disease is a RESTING TREMOR (occurs when the arm is supported) at a slow 3-8 cycles/sec. INTENTION TREMORS, also called essential, familial or senile tremors, are accentuated by tasks requiring precision such as writing or carrying a glass of water. An intention tremor that increases in amplitude as the finger approaches the target is characteristic of cerebellar disease. PHYSIOLOGIC TREMOR is associated with performance anxiety. Essential and physiologic tremors are relieved by beta-blocker or benzodiazepine drugs. [Primary Care Medicine, 3rd ed. Goroll, May and Mulley, eds. J.B Lippincott (1995) p. 842-44]
