Category
Epoxy Resins
Description
Monohydrate: White solid; mp = 40 deg C; [Merck Index] Yellowish-brown odorless liquid; [ICSC] Clear or pale yellow viscous liquid; mp = 8-12 deg C; [NTP] Liquid; mp = 40 deg C; [Aldrich MSDS]
Sources/Uses
Bisphenol A glycidyl ether (BADGE) has a molecular weight of 340 g/mole. It is the basic building block of most epoxy resins. The dimer has less potential for skin sensitization. [Kanerva, p. 1759] Used to make epoxy resins and polycarbonates for food packaging; [Merck Index] An epoxy resin used in adhesives and fiberglassing; [REPROTOX] Used to make castings and pottings, in light weight foams, and as binders in making laminates of paper, polyester cloth, fiberglass cloth, and wood sheets; [NTP]
Comments
Allergic contact dermatitis reported in workers producing printed circuit boards and epoxy-impregnated fiberglass fabric; [Kanerva, p. 1759] Occupational contact urticaria has been reported; [Kanerva, p. 574] A skin and eye irritant; May cause skin sensitization; [ICSC] Occupational asthma reported in an epoxy resin handler; [Malo] Readily oxidized in air forming unstable peroxides that can spontaneously explode; [CAMEO] An eye irritant; Repeated skin contact causes dermatitis with smarting and reddening of the skin; [NTP] A skin and severe eye irritant; May cause skin sensitization; [Aldrich MSDS]
